When it comes to order fulfillment, picking is one of the most critical operations in the warehouse. The way items are picked can significantly impact efficiency, speed, and accuracy. But is there a perfect picking strategy that works in every scenario?
Is There an Always Perfect Picking Strategy?
The answer is simple: No.
The best picking strategy depends on a variety of factors, including:
Warehouse Layout: How items are stored and organized.
Number of SKUs: A warehouse with a small SKU range may need a different approach than one with thousands of unique items.
Worker Ability: The skill and experience of your team can influence which strategy works best.
Storage Policy: Whether items are stored randomly, in fixed locations, or in zones.
Order Types: Are most orders single-item or multi-item? Are items scattered across the warehouse?
Optimization is more of an art than a science, with new challenges emerging daily. This is where OTO PACK steps in, offering flexibility and tools to help you discover and implement the best strategies for your needs.
Picking Strategies in OTO PACK
1. Single Order Picking
Best For: Minimizing the completion time of a specific order.
Advantages:
Ensures the fastest possible fulfillment for high-priority orders.
Disadvantages:
Increases the average time for picking across all orders.
How OTO PACK Helps:
In OTO PACK Advanced, you can select an order and create a wave for that specific order, optimizing its completion.
2. Multiple Order Batch Picking
Best For: Warehouses with lots of similar orders.
Advantages:
Groups similar orders into a single wave, speeding up the picking process for items with overlapping SKUs.
How OTO PACK Helps:
Use the Wave Creation Pilot to identify similar orders and group them into a single wave.
? Check article “Wave Creation Pilot” for more details!
3. Multiple Order Wave Picking
Best For: Increasing efficiency across multiple orders.
Advantages:
Allows pickers to handle several orders at once, reducing average picking time.
Disadvantages:
Total processing time may be longer compared to single-order picking.
Larger waves can cause delays if packers wait too long for items.
How OTO PACK Helps:
In OTO PACK Advanced, you can customize the size of waves to balance the entire fulfillment process, avoiding bottlenecks.
4. Multiple Order Zone Picking
Best For: Large warehouses with specialized items or teams.
Advantages:
Reduces picker travel time by assigning pickers to specific zones.
Allows for specialization, improving accuracy and speed.
Disadvantages:
Requires a well-organized warehouse with clearly defined zones.
How OTO PACK Helps:
Use Bin & Zone Configuration to set up your warehouse zones and assign pickers accordingly.
? Refer to our Bin & Zone Configuration article for step-by-step guidance.
